Genius on a Shovel
I know … “Genius on a Shovel” is an odd name for a title. But stick with me and it will make sense!
One of the core principles of living a Peak Capacity life and getting the results that kind of impact deserves is really being disciplined about HOW we use our time. We all have the same amount of time. Some of us just use it on higher value projects than others and therefore get a higher return.
Typically our highest value work is when we are focused on using our unique abilities, our superpowers, to move the needle on our business.
The other day I was talking to a doctor and I knew it was his afternoon off from seeing patients. He uses Tuesday afternoon for other work projects, real estate investments, and bringing other revenue streams into his business. This particular day, when I asked what he’d been up to he said “Well…just got in from planting a tree!”
What the hell?!?!? How is that a good use of time???
This is a doctor who has already gone through the steps to build some margin in his life. But I speak to him often about making sure that he invests the margin wisely! That he uses that margin for high value projects and tasks that are going to move him forward towards his goals. His next income goal is to exceed $400k/year which would be making more than $200/hr. Planting a tree is NOT $200/hr work!
Sarcastically, my response was “Apparently your genius is found on the end of a shovel? Like you couldn’t have hired that out for $30-40?”
His response was “Not necessarily. And I could have hired it out, but it was one of those projects that I enjoy. I worked up a sweat. And it cleared my head and now that I’m back to deep work I’m crushing it!”
Sometimes it’s easy to lose sight of the need to have moments of disconnect to stop the brain from consciously working on deep challenges, so the subconscious can work on those same challenges. THEN when you get back in to deep work the solutions will come easier and the answers will flow from you. That pause could be for a weekend, an evening, or even just an hour planting a tree!
