I'm Making This Up As I Go!
May 02, 2023
You haven't lived until you've seen one of the Indiana Jones films! In a scene in "Raiders of the Lost Ark", Dr. Jones is talking to his mission buddies as they're trying to get out of the dangerous desert and back to England, a destination of safety and security. As he leaves the perch where they're spying on the German enemies, Dr. Jones tells his associate before they find a boat back to safety, "Be ready for me, I'm going after that truck" as first steps to get them to their eventual destination. Given the immense fortification of the German Army in the region, Indiana's associate asks what all of us are thinking..."How"?
His response? "I have no idea, I'm making this up as I go"!
Might be one of the best philosophies in creating new business lanes ever. But maybe let's pump the brakes for a minute. Let's break down the context of the storyline. At this point in history, obviously the German Army was an extremely strong force across the globe and was able to press it's way to essentially any point or location on the globe. Dr. Jones on the other hand is a very small drop in the bucket, even with trusty sidekicks! Yet he knew his destination, he knew he had the skills and experience to do what was necessary to steal the truck...to obtain the vehicle that would take him to his destination. If you watch the remainder of the scene, you'll find it wasn't without a bit of blood, sweat and tears but he was able to secure the truck that obviously continued the journey.
Call that truck your vehicle to what's next. Hopefully you have an idea of where you want your life to go. It might be expanding the walls of your practice. Maybe it's staying in the current lane of seeing patients to a certain degree AND opening a new lane of business pursuit to build into a new future inside or outside of healthcare. OR maybe your current lane of practice life is ready to come to a close and you're ready to move on to something entirely new and different. ALL of those options have 2 things in common. 1) They're all great options at the right time and context. 2) At some point, you're going to have to make things up as you go along because you've never been to the next step.
You can work on your vision, and hopefully you are. But once that vision of 1-3-5 years is as clear as you can make it, something has to happen to propel you off of your perch. You can't observe the "enemy" of creating your future forever. At some point you need to decide it's time to move. Just like Indiana sprung from his perch, you will need to decide to spring from your perch into your new life! Will you have all your ducks in a row? Likely not and thats ok. Develop your plan, put people around you who've been there before and create a clear picture where you're going and...make up the rest as you go!
